How This Differs From the General Coast Guard PT Test
The AST standard is not the Coast Guard's general physical fitness test. The service-wide Coast Guard PT test is a separate and lower bar that every member meets, and it contains no underwater swims and no buddy tow. How to Train for Rescue Swimmer Selection
Most rescue swimmer training plans sit behind a paywall. Here is a usable progression, free, built around the four capacities the standards test: aerobic swim capacity, breath-hold confidence, upper-body strength endurance and towing power.
Weeks 1 to 4, build the base. Swim four days a week, 1,500 to 2,000 yards per session, freestyle only, emphasizing stroke efficiency over speed. Add three strength sessions with pull-ups, push-ups, rows and loaded carries. Cap underwater work at one supervised 25-yard effort per session.
Weeks 5 to 8, add specificity. Move to 2,000 to 2,500 yards per swim and introduce intervals: 10 x 100 yards on a fixed send-off, then 6 x 200. Begin buddy tows at 50 to 100 yards. Push pull-up volume with weighted singles and high-rep density sets in the same week.
Weeks 9 to 12, peak. Test the full battery every two weeks and build tows to 200 yards. Layer fatigue deliberately: run the push-up and sit-up sets first, then swim, because that is the order the school uses against you.
Two rules govern the block. Never train breath-hold work alone and never chain hypoxic reps. Shallow water blackout has killed strong swimmers, and no version of this plan is worth that risk. Second, protect the shoulders. Four swim days plus heavy pulling is a high-volume shoulder program, so band work and scapular strength are not optional.
The tow is where most candidates fail, and it is a strength endurance problem rather than a swimming one. The same quality that drives strength endurance for amphibious operations is what holds a cross-chest carry for 200 yards with your legs doing the work.
Timing matters as much as content. With a school date, the last four weeks reduce volume and hold intensity, the same logic behind peaking for selection in any dated pipeline. How Dangerous Is the Job?
Coast Guard rescue swimmer work carries genuine risk, and the hazards are environmental rather than adversarial. Its swimmers get hurt by water, weather, aircraft and time in the cold.
The main hazards are consistent. Night operations remove visual reference. Heavy seas make hoisting and survivor control unpredictable. Debris, rigging and fishing gear create entanglement risk. Cold water is the constant.
Cold deserves a physiological understanding rather than an emotional one. Sudden immersion triggers a cold shock response: an involuntary gasp and uncontrolled hyperventilation that can be fatal within the first minute, well before hypothermia. Swim failure follows as peripheral cooling degrades muscle function. Understanding cold and water stress is why exposure suits, water temperature rules and swimmer time limits exist.
The mitigation is the training. Monthly and quarterly testing, currency requirements, mandatory exposure protection, hoist procedures and crew resource management exist because the failure modes are known. Swimmers who fall out of currency do not deploy. This is a real risk profile, and it deserves a clear-eyed decision rather than bravado or avoidance.
Gear and Equipment
